The CIJE (Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education) Boston Engineering Trip was far more than just a school excursion—it was a deep dive into the frontiers of science, technology, and innovation. Over three packed days, we explored the cutting edge of robotics, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, 3D printing, and even oceanography. Each experience opened our minds to new possibilities and ignited ideas about the future we could help build.
Day 1: Exploring MIT and Harvard
We started the trip at the MIT Museum, where the exhibits weren’t just impressive—they were futuristic. One display highlighted ongoing research into artificial wombs using pigs as hosts—a concept straight out of sci-fi that aims to ease the physical challenges of pregnancy. Another standout was Jibo, an AI-powered social robot that could hold a conversation, display personality, and even respond with human-like charm. It was a real-life glimpse into the future of home and healthcare robotics.
Dinner brought us to Harvard Chabad, where we connected over delicious food and meaningful conversations about Jewish life in a predominantly secular academic environment. The balance between science and faith was a powerful theme, reminding us that you don’t have to leave one behind to pursue the other.
The night concluded at Boda Borg, an immersive team-building activity that challenged our problem-solving skills in a fun, escape-room setting. While not directly related to engineering, it showed us the value of communication, trust, and collaboration—core skills for any future innovator.
Day 2: Biotechnology, 3D Printing, and Robotics
Our second day was a whirlwind of high-tech wonder. First stop: the Broad Institute, a globally recognized biomedical research center. We toured multiple labs focused on genetic research and treatments. The potential of CRISPR and other gene-editing technologies to fight genetic disorders left us awestruck. It’s one thing to read about this stuff in class—it’s another to hear it explained by the people changing the world.
Next up was Formlabs, where we dove into the fascinating world of 3D printing. We learned about processes like stereolithography and fused deposition modeling and how they reshape everything from medical devices to architecture. Seeing objects created layer by layer in front of our eyes was incredibly satisfying—and surprisingly artistic.
But the true showstopper of the day was RAI Labs, affiliated with Boston Dynamics. This is where engineering dreams come to life. We met Spot, the agile quadruped robot, and watched it move, react, and even draw! Spot isn’t just a cool tech toy—it’s a working robot used in fields like construction, security, and disaster response. It was like watching the future unfold in real time.
We ended the day with dinner at The Wok, which was delicious—maybe even better than Tokyo Bar, but I’ll let others decide that debate!
Day 3: Ocean Engineering and Creative Innovation
Our final day brought a new perspective—how engineering intersects with environmental science. At the MIT Sea Grant program, we worked with marine biologists to explore the effects of ocean acidification. A hands-on experiment showed us how rising acidity affects aquatic life, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices and eco-engineering. It was a sobering reminder that the world needs more scientists and engineers who care deeply about the planet.
From the ocean to the future of human experience, we wrapped up at the MIT Media Lab, a playground of innovation where art meets science. We explored revolutionary AI, wearable tech, and user experience design projects. Meeting Mitch Resnik, the creator of Scratch and Lego Mindstorms, was surreal. He shared how creativity fuels innovation—even if that means building with Legos, coloring, or brainstorming with dogs in the boardroom (yes, dogs are allowed in meetings there!). The whole space radiated curiosity and joy.
Although we had to leave early to catch our flight, the Media Lab left a lasting impression on all of us.
Final Thoughts: Why This Trip Mattered
The CIJE Boston Engineering Trip was more than just a peek into the future—it was a deep, personal exploration of what’s possible. It reinforced that engineering isn’t just about machines and code—it’s about people, imagination, and impact. We learned that great ideas can come from anywhere, collaboration fuels success, and the best innovations are often born in the most creative environments.
Personally, this trip fueled my passion for engineering and opened doors to areas I hadn’t even considered before. If you’re a student interested in STEM, I can’t recommend this experience enough. It will challenge you, inspire you, and maybe even change how you see your future.
