Last week, Mesorah High School had the privilege of hosting representatives from the Orthodox Union (OU) to provide an in-depth presentation on the intricate processes that support their kosher certification. This session offered students a rare glimpse into the complex operations behind the widely recognized OU hechsher, which ensures that countless products meet the highest standards of kashrut.
During their visit, the OU team addressed a range of topics, beginning with an overview of the detailed procedures involved in their kosher factories. Students learned how various ingredients and production methods are evaluated to determine their kosher status, and how certain subtle variations can influence whether a product or establishment can receive certification.
Some of the highlights of the discussion were checking for bugs in lettuce and strawberries, exploring kosher coffee shops, and determining the specific criteria that permit these establishments to be certified. The OU representatives explained how seemingly minor details—such as the origin of flavorings or the status of shared equipment—are carefully assessed to ensure full compliance with halachic standards.
Overall, the presentation was both enlightening and educational, giving students a clearer understanding of the meticulous efforts that go into ensuring the integrity of the OU certification. By revealing the “behind the scenes” operations, the OU not only enhanced students’ knowledge of kashrut but also deepened their appreciation for the dedicated work that makes kosher products accessible and reliable. ■
