Wow—what an incredible Yom Iyun!
The day began with davening, followed by a delicious spread of muffins and iced coffee to energize everyone for the meaningful program ahead. Students then gathered in the Davening Room to hear from our inspiring guest speaker, Mrs. Rachel Adlerstein, who spoke passionately about the concept of Derech Eretz and how it shapes the way we live.
Mrs. Adlerstein guided us through the idea of “Derech Eretz kadmah laTorah”—that proper character and behavior are a foundation for Torah—and helped us explore how the two are inseparable. Through thoughtful source learning in pairs, students discussed how Derech Eretz and Torah go hand in hand, each strengthening the other, and how these values apply to our daily lives.
Next came a “Game of Priorities” where students debated and ranked which values, middos, and aspects of life are truly most important to them. It was incredible to see such meaningful discussion and introspection as each group reflected on what really matters most.
The morning continued with a special presentation from our Tech Heads, who introduced this month’s challenge: “Taking Responsibility for My Relationship with Technology.” Students were encouraged to spend one hour each week completely tech-free—to connect with family, friends, or nature. In addition, each girl received a “tech buddy” to encourage and support her through this personal growth challenge. Every student also had the opportunity to choose a teacher mentor, meeting monthly to reflect on progress and strengthen this area of responsibility. To symbolize connection and encouragement, students created friendship bracelets for their buddies—simple but meaningful reminders of support and growth.
Afterward, we were privileged to hear from Mrs. Nechama Katz, who delivered a moving address on the topic of achrayus—personal responsibility. Through stories, mishalim, and Torah sources, she emphasized the importance of owning our actions, avoiding the “blame game,” and stepping up when something needs to be done. Her message was powerful: each of us has the ability—and the obligation—to take responsibility for our choices and make a difference.
Students then participated in a lively Kahoot! game that reinforced the themes of Derech Eretz and Achrayus through fun, relatable scenarios. To close the learning segment, groups worked collaboratively on creative poster boards illustrating what Derech Eretz and Achrayus look like at Mesorah. These designs will soon be combined into one large display to be hung throughout the hallways as a lasting reminder of the day’s lessons.
The Yom Iyun concluded with a delicious panini bar lunch, filled with laughter, friendship, and a shared sense of inspiration.
A heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Adlerstein and Mrs. Katz for sharing their time, wisdom, and inspiration with our students. Enormous gratitude as well to our Yom Iyun heads, Avigayil Quinn, Chana Wachsman, and the many students who worked behind the scenes—through lunch, study hall, and even late into the night—to make this meaningful day such a success.
It was truly a Yom Iyun to remember—one that reminded us all that living with Derech Eretz and Achrayus is not just about what we learn, but how we live. ■
